There's going to be a fire starting soon. I feel you all should know this, even if you can't hear me yet, you silly sheep.

There's going to be a great big fire and it'll send everything up in flames and there's nothing any of you can do to stop it, because you're all still just sheep.

I'd feel bad for you, but really, it'd just be a lie no matter how nice I said it, but don't worry! Your world is going to be swallowed by flames, but some of you sheep will turn into people again!

And really, I have only the happiest of thoughts to all you people out there. You're so kind to liven up my boring existence.

You're all so kind to die for me.

-Let us begin, Mankind

---
The City of Sunrise, an intersection between a tunnel, a bridge, and a row of houses, Late-August
---

It could only have been by luck that something as catastrophic as a traffic crash could happen on such a bright and sunny day, but bad luck prevailed, and the driver of the Public Transit No.3 found the intersection of 4th and Crawford nearly blocked entirely by the heap of two other vehicles. The driver barely managed to swerve around the wrecks, only to crash sideways upon the tunnel entrance. Perhaps by luck again, the bus was not torn in two by the impact, nor did the bus cave in and crush anyone inside, but without a doubt, the tunnel was blocked off by the bus. Unluckily, however, the engine of the bus had begun to smoke seconds after the impact, spurring the driver to a frantic state.

Though dazed, the bus driver was a professional. In moments, he'd begun evacuating the various students and other passengers he'd been driving out of the bus and over to the relatively safe position of a nearby house's front lawn. Before retiring to the relatively easy job as bus driver, he'd been a fireman for the Sunrise Fire Department, with the years of experience lending him an authoritarian voice to command the passengers. After almost ten minutes, he'd both gotten all of his passengers onto the front lawn and was just pulling out a cell phone.

"Everyone, please stay in groups of five so I can do a headcount." The driver nodded to a few of the more collected passengers as he dialed for emergency help. "The authorities should get here soon enough, so please make sure that you're all alright. Let me know if anyone is injured and needs help."

It had been another simple day as a student at the university. His His schedule had concerned taking his average classes of Biology II, Anatomy II, and American History. He'd gotten on the bus after his classes were over and placed his fourth generation Ipod' headphones in so he could listen to Maroon 5's album "Songs about Jane." As he turned the wheel to select a song, he decided to start with his favorite song of the album, "This Love". His grey shirt had been a little wrinkled from the dryer this morning, but nothing that would've made him uncomfortable in the vehicle's chairs.

What Anthony hadn't expected was the swerve that led to the bus's crash in front of the tunnel. He paused the music, which was playing "She will be loved." He followed the driver's instruction and quickly exited the transportation vehicle and was placed into a group of five with an Indian and two raven haired women (one of which was slightly taller), along with man with wavy light brown hair.

If they were going to be stuck here, he wouldn't make himself antisocial. "So, don't you all think its a good thing nothing bad happened to all of us with all these wrecks occurring?" The tall red head asked the four strangers.

Carmine stumbled off the bus along with the rest, one hand clamped over his bleeding scalp while the other strained to keep hold of his backpack and the CD player and broken headphones he hadn't taken the time to stuff inside. Sitting next to the window had been a bad idea. His head throbbed, he tasted blood in the corner of his mouth, and there was surely shattered glass still stuck in him that he couldn't get out until he was well away from the bus. He smelled smoke over the usual reek of plastic and confined bodies.

This was why he walked when he could help it. And he could have helped it. Never get lazy, he berated himself. Never get lazy. But at least now he could walk. That was a good sign; if he had a concussion, it was a mild one.

He made his unsteady way over to the designated area and sank gracelessly to the lawn without regard to whoever happened to be nearby, dropping his things and fumbling one-handed with his bag's zipper. He dug out a water bottle and a towel he normally used to blot off sweat during his training, glad at least that he'd washed it that morning. He did his best to clean off his face and not disturb the wound itself. He wasn't about to go poking around it without a mirror. At least it was just his headphones that had broken when his head hit the window, and not his skull - although it sure felt like it.

He shot a sharp glare at the guy who decided to wander over and spew inanity. "Speak for yourself," he snapped, dropping the rag into his lap to expose the bloody mess that had once been the left side of his forehead. God it hurt. "Might consider checking before you start making stupid generalizations next time." His quick glance encompassed the others nearby without settling long enough to read features. Just enough to confirm that there were indeed people there, meaning other eyes that could see and other hands that would hopefully not make things worse. "Is there still glass in me?"

Layla had barely registered anything before the sudden crash. The bus ride was going to be long enough for her to want to keep herself occupied, but not long enough for her to consider sleeping. She hated lengthy bus rides. They were just down time, and most other people riding were always unwilling to talk for more than a minute or two. So she had put on her headphones and shut her eyes, blocking out everything else. As a piece of folk music from India had come on, she thought she saw the golden land in her mind again, briefly. Then the bus suddenly swerved, throwing Layla out of her reverie just in time for her to brace herself and avoid slamming headfirst into the window next to her.

"Whew...what a rush," she said to herself as she made her way out, suddenly realizing with some shame and embarrassment that she was enjoying the sensation of surviving what could easily have been a much worse accident. Bad Layla. People could have gotten hurt.

She made her way over to the group she had ushered toward, taking a moment to admire how well the driver and many of the passengers were keeping a cool head in the situation. As soon as she got over to her group, however, she realized that someone had gotten hurt. She hurried over to the messy-haired man now holding a rag to his head, reaching him in time for him to take it away, snap at someone, and ask if there was any glass left.

"I don't see any," she said, giving the wound a look and spotting nothing that could easily be identified as glass shards. She knew she was no professional though. There had to be someone better qualified around. Even so, she asked "How are you feeling? Are you okay?"

That's right. The driver had said to let him know if anyone was injured. "Hey! Over here!" she called, signaling for the driver.

The driver stopped his foot-tapping and quickly approached the group, holding his bus' first-aid kit in one hand and a cell phone in the other. Upon seeing Carmine's face, he immediately snapped open the kit and shoved disinfectant and bandages into Anthony's hands, then carefully swept his forefingers over Carmine's forehead.

"...alright. You're lucky, kid." The driver sighed, releasing Carmine and stepping back. He turned to Anthony and Layla and nodded to them. "I have to keep checking on the rest of the passengers, so I need you two to clean and bandage him up for me. Remember; wrap with both ends and don't go too tight. I'll be back soon to check up on you guys."

The driver jogged over to another group and began to help them, only for one of them to point towards the house that the lawn they were standing on belonged to. An elderly lady with purple-grey hair in a ponytail shuffled out through her front door, a little dog following her with an easy gait. The bus driver jogged over to her and the two began to talk, the driver looking apologetic and the old lady looking understanding, with a smile.

"I've been better." Carmine grimaced at the close scrutiny, half-expecting her to prod at the wound, but thankfully she didn't. "Been worse. But been better. Don't seem to have a concussion, at least." He was no stranger to what those felt like.

He reapplied his towel until the bus driver came over, and this time winced when he did poke around. Lucky. Well, it wasn't too lucky they'd been in a wreck, and it wasn't too lucky he'd leaned down to look for another CD just when it happened and cracked his head into the shattering window, but it could have been much worse. It could have knocked him out. Or the glass could have done more extensive damage. Or the bus could have sheared in two and they'd all have much bigger things to worry about. In that light, "lucky" was a pretty good summary. That smell of smoke, though... Soon as his head was wrapped up, he was moving farther away from the wreck.

He nodded, even so slight a movement making his neck and head ache - probably whiplash - and waved for the other idiot to bring the supplies over. The driver couldn't have at least given them to the girl who called him over and was showing some concern rather than the slack-jawed conclusion-jumper? "Hand it over, I can take care of this." And even if he couldn't, he'd have more faith in the girl. Now that he got a good look at her, she appeared foreign. Indian? Interesting. Another ethnicity to add to his mental list of what nationalities he'd encountered in this city.

"Chill out. I've had training due to my major." Anthony said as he knelt down next to the injured man. Grabbing a cotton ball, the physical therapy student gently applied disinfectant to the wound, doing his best from putting pressure and therefore causing pain to the agitated man.

The streaks of strawberry-blonde gleamed in the sun's rays as the student's hair moved as he maneuvered to effectively bandage the wound. After the task was done, the tall nineteen year old sat down across from the two strangers. "I'm sorry about asking that conclusive question. I should've waited and made sure that everyone was alright before I spouted nonsense." He apologized.

He noticed that the driver was now conversing with an elderly woman. This probably meant they would be there a while. "Since it seems like the driver is a bit of a chatter bug, why don't we get to know each other? The name's Anthony Ivystein, 19, and currently studying pre-med Biology at UMS." He spoke after rubbing his left eye, which felt strangely heavy for the time of day it was.

Naomi wasn't really sure what she should be doing at a time like this. She'd gotten off well enough, besides some bruising from where she'd hit her arm on the seat in front of her—she'd been twisted to the side a bit when the accident happened. It would likely hurt a fair bit in the morning, but it wasn't anything she hadn't had to deal with many times before. She was more concerned with the others who had been on the bus, but wasn't really sure what she could do to help. nobody here seemed to be hurt seriously—though some were worse off than her, it didn't look like anyone was in any real danger at the moment.

She hated just standing around like this, but she didn't want to get any close to the bus with it smoking like that, so she couldn't even take a look to see if anyone involved in the first accident needed help. About all she could do was wait here, it seemed. Really, they were quite lucky nobody had been injured worse... the bus had apparently been pretty sturdy, since it wouldn't have been surprising to see the whole thing torn in two considering how it had hit, but is still seemed to be intact and not too misshapen.

"You okay?" She asked to the first person she noticed who seemed to have been injured, at least judging by the bandages on his forehead. Of course, she realized as soon as she'd said it that that wasn't a very good question to be asking right now. "Sorry, stupid question," she apologized a moment later, "Still a little out of it, I guess. Anyone here need any help, or anything?"

Layla opened her mouth to try and convince the man that he was better off leaving applying bandages to someone who could actually see the injury they were working with, but before she could say anything she was all but shoved aside by the one the injured man had snapped at, who insisted on doing it himself. Though she couldn't deny being a little resentful of that, she stepped out of the way, though she continued to watch until he was done just to make sure he didn't do anything stupid. She was far from a professional herself, but she at least had enough knowledge of first aid that she'd have rather relied on her own skills than those of someone who only claimed to know what he was doing because of a major he couldn't have been studying for long. It was like claiming that she could act as therapist for people just because she was studying psychology. That was just a good way to do more harm than good.

Maybe she was being a little too harsh with that judgment though. As careless as the guy had come off, it was just a bandage job.

Once he was done, however, that little bit of resentment cleared up and she found herself more concerned with the well-being of everyone else again. In the meantime, the self-proclaimed pre-med student decided to introduce himself. Rather...thoroughly. "Um..." she said, hesitating on how to follow it up. "I'm Layla. And I think there's more important things to be worried about right now than a full background right now, so that'll have to wait."

Speaking of which, here was someone else who had been grouped with them. "We're fine now, I think," she answered, instinctively checking to see if the new girl was hurt. "What about you?"

Under the bridge so tall, is where I drew some blood...

Roy was fast asleep, leaning over the backpack that lie on his lap. His new iPod's volume was loud enough for anyone sitting next to him to hear the Red Hot Chili Pepper's hit song blasting into his ears.

Under the bridge so tall, is where I gave my life away...

The next thing Roy realized was he was lying face-first in the aisle of the bus, wheezing and coughing. He worked his way onto his hands and knees as the wind that was knocked out of him slowly returned. After a few other people on the bus helped him up, Roy finally realized that the bus had crashed. From the back of the bus, he could see people filing out and the faint stain of smoke through the front window. This alone was good enough reason for Roy to get out, and be escorted to a group of people.

He arrived just in time to see someone obsessing over a cut he had on his forehead. Roy would've offered to help, but someone beat him to it...and that someone was immediately shut down. Wow, what a bitch. Just accept the help, geez... Thankfully, someone eventually came over and gave him a bit of basic first-aid. Still, that only lasted for so long, then the kid took it upon himself to treat his wound. Now, ANOTHER person came over and started working on this kid. It was slowly becoming their own unique emergency...besides the bus that could explode at any second.

Roy started to meander around, kicking a tree a few times when he was close to one. The kid who treated the obsessive one tried to create smalltalk. Roy twitched when he mention he was going to UMS. Of course we go to UMS man... Silly frosh... Roy grinned and was going to respond, but he was quickly shut down by someone else who joined the group. She wanted to know if everyone was okay. And here we go again... Someone else responded and said everyone was okay, but if the first girl was okay. Roy couldn't take it anyone.

"I'm pretty sure that everyone is alright now." Roy walked closer to the group proper, pulling the headphones off his ears and letting them rest around his neck. "Look, lets just chill out for a sec, okay? When they tell us to move, we'll move. Everyone asking 'are you okay?' really isn't helping. Right?" Roy took a quick look around to see that other groups were up to...nothing. "Anyway, looks like we got some down time. I'm Roy, don't think I caught any of your names before..."

Carmine nearly shoved the guy - Anthony, apparently - away, but it wasn't like the wound could be made much worse. He winced at the disinfectant's sting and tested the bandages afterward. Not bad. Maybe the guy wasn't completely useless. He shrugged off his apology and then stared at him when he proceeded to give his full biography to a group of strangers. At least Layla spoke first and saved him a second tongue-lashing with far more polite words than he would have chosen.

"Carmine," he muttered, and gathered his limbs under himself to shakily get to his feet. Once certain he wasn't about to topple over again, he cast the next girl to have shown up a wry glance. "Not as stupid a question as some." Back to Layla, ignoring this Roy person who at least seemed to have some sense, even if he nearly made Carmine snap again. Better to ask if people were okay than not bother to check at all. "More important things to worry about, like getting farther away from the bus that could explode any minute?"

So saying, he stuffed the bloody towel in his backpack and hauled it further across the yard, stopping only when he judged himself far enough away to be slightly less likely to end up full of shrapnel if the worst occurred. There he sank down again and started arranging the contents of his pack more tidily, amazed to see there wasn't all that much blood on his clothing. If the others didn't follow...well, quiet was nice. Except now he was near enough to hear the driver's conversation with the home's owner, and with his headphones broken, he had to do his best to ignore it instead of drowning it out. It was difficult. Pain and blood loss had him in a fouler mood than usual.

"Oh, dearie, just look at you!" Suddenly, Mrs. Carmichael was no longer standing beside the bus driver. She was instead crouched down in front of Carmine and was pinching his cheeks with both hands, tsk'ing to herself in worry. "Look at those nasty bandages! You must've gotten hurt in the crash, dearie. Come, come; let's go inside and I'll get you a nice soda pop and something for those cuts."

Carmine's response was polite rejection and mental distance. And being uncomfortable. "I appreciate the offer, but no thanks."

"You silly dear. I had a cat like you, once." Mrs. Carmichael patted Carmine on the head and smiled pleasantly at him. She then hauled him to his feet with both hands on his shoulders, showing surprisingly strength. "He was a very sensitive kitty, always going off on his own and hating to be pet. Oh, but he did love his milk, let me tell you, dear."

"I'm not a cat." Carmine quickly pulled away, his stare suggesting he questioned her mental condition. "And I'm not going to go wandering off after an accident." He looked past her to try to get some backup from the bus driver.

"Oh, I know, dearie." Mrs. Carmichael smiled at Carmine again, not moving to stop his distancing. "You just remind me of him, is all."

"It's alright if you'd like to wait inside, kid." The driver seemed a little less stressed now, probably calming down after the adrenilin from surviving the crash. He tried to smile at Carmine, but still couldn't pull it off. "I understand if she's a little off-putting. If you'd like to wait for the ambulance, that's fine, too."

"I'd just as soon wait here." He grabbed his backpack once again and retreated to lean against a nearby tree, but glanced at the lady. "Sorry to be rude. I'd just rather be outside."

Mrs. Carmichael tittered a little to herself, but left Carmine alone and began approaching other students. The bus driver approached the same group that Carmine had momentarily left and motioned for them to both listen and stay quiet while he was talking.

"Listen, can you four please keep an eye on that guy over there?" He gestured over to Carmine with a worried look. "I think he might be more injured than he's letting on, so please just make sure he doesn't wander off or pass out while we're waiting, alright?"

"I'm pretty sure he doesn't like me that much right now, but I'll make sure to keep an eye on him." Anthony said as he scratched the back of his head.

The sophomore made his way to the first aide kit that was by the woman's house. He neatly replaced the remaining cotton balls and the bottle of disinfectant back into the kit before someone from another group came over and requested the kit. "Here you go." Anthony said as he handed the case to the woman. "Thank you." She said before returning to the others in her group.

"My, my. You seem like the nice young fellow." Mrs. Carmichael said as she approached the tall red-haired youth. "Just doing my best to help the others." Anthony replied with a smile. "You know, you remind me of a cat I once had. He was very gentle and was always taking care of the other cats. If I hadn't known better, I would say he was their big brother." She said with a smile as she patted his freckled cheek.

"Thank you... I think." He replied. The woman also invited him insider her house, which he had to kindly turn down, stating that he had to keep an eye on Carmine.

"Oh, that's too bad." She said as she began to approach the others.

'What a nice lady.' He though as he smiled and turned a careful eye back to the injured Carmine.

"No problem," Layla said brightly, glancing back over at Carmine. He seemed fine, for the most part, but Layla's medical knowledge was admittedly limited to how to give first aid to someone. She gave a cheerful smile, which caught the woman's attention.

"What a lively young lady you are," she said. "I had a cat much like you a long time ago. She was so much more active than the other cats...would always wander off and be gone for days, but she'd always come home in the end. Probably off having adventures."

Layla found herself unable to formulate a good response to that. 'That's sweet' came to mind, among other things, but she suspected that the woman was trying to get at something that Layla just wasn't catching. Still, it was a nice thought, she supposed. "Poor dear," the woman continued, "she died long before her time." And just like that, Layla's good mood died. Her first thought was to sarcastically thanked the woman for taking that good mood out behind the woodshed and blowing its brains out, but she was too nice to actually say that. Instead, she simply sighed softly, looking back toward Carmine, and eventually excusing herself to go sit by him.

"Sorry about all this," she said vaguely, not thinking of anything else to say to him. That comment had completely thrown her off.

"Not like there's anything you could do about it." Blunt, perhaps, but platitudes had never been Carmine's strong suit. He sat down with his back to the tree - and to the accident - and watched the strange old lady progress through the students. He didn't know what she'd said to Layla, but it seemed to have curbed her enthusiasm of a moment ago. What she'd said to him probably had some sort of metaphor in there, but he wasn't about to bother figuring it out. It wasn't like she could know anything about him from occupying the same yard for two minutes.

Setting that aside, he glanced from Layla to Anthony and sighed, dropping his forehead to rest on his propped knee. Great. Now he had babysitters. Still...he supposed it was nice of them to be willing to watch over him instead of going inside where it would probably be more comfortable. Which meant anything that might happen to them out here if the bus blew would be his fault. Or maybe they just didn't want to enter the house of a crazy old cat lady, and if that was the case he couldn't blame them. He liked cats, but he didn't like the smell of a lot of them in close confines.

He lifted his head and fiddled with his broken headphones. Good thing they'd been cheap; no repairing that mess. "I said I'm not going anywhere and that wasn't enough blood loss to make me pass out. Go in if you want to go in. I don't need watchdogs." And it's probably safer, he thought, but didn't add. That much should be obvious. The tree he sat against would shield him, but wouldn't do anything for the rest of them. He just wanted to be able to get clear if the worst happened, not be stuck in a house with a mess of other students and their noise.
