This thread should be self explanatory, no?

Sorry, but I have to point out something rather silly.

Of talk of course, about the "Most Underrated", and how it's a self-contradicting award. The person who is most underrated will never actually win this award because everyone underrates him and thus fails to recognise him (or her). If someone wins this award, then they can't really be underrated now, can they? This award is basically "Popularity Contest Number Two".

It's meant to give recognition for those people who perform well but receive the least amount of recognition for their work.

That's sort of my point.

It's an award recognising people who get little recognition, but in order to win the award, they must be recognised enough to get the votes, and therefore are hardly unrecognised at all.

The chances are, the person most deserving of the award will not win it because he's underrated. The thing that the award rewards is the very thing that will stop the person most deserving from winning it.

That said, I'm really not intelligent enough to debate things, I just thought I express my opinion that the award is rather silly.

I actually concur with Shuuda and have been saying it for a while.

What is underrated?

QUOTE(Dictionary.com)
-verb (used with object), -rat·ed, -rat·ing.
to rate or evaluate too low; underestimate.

To rate or evaluate too low. How do we determine someone is underrated? Clearly it means we have a higher opinion of someone than we think others have, e.g., we believe that others do not see the proper potential or abilities the person displays.

To WIN this award, a MAJORITY needs to think that a MAJORITY doesn't appreciate the nominee enough. In other words, you need a majority of people who think you are better than others give you credit for: it's more a "Most Overrated" award than "Underrated" due to the very nature of voting for awards themselves. If a majority of people think you're better than others think, then it's unlikely you are very underrated because most actually think high of you.

It'd probably be better just to have a Most Promising Newcomer award instead, particularly to prevent things like Spamm winning five billion times in a row. :P

LOL Shuuda is indeed correct.

I've always treated "Most Underrated" as "second best"...

You guys are missing something, I think, when it comes to the discussion of "Most Underrated". That is, you are assuming that everybody reads everybody's threads and knows of everybody else's quality, which is most certainly not the case. The underlying assumption of "Most Underrated", I believe, is that most of the members have not RPed with/are not too familiar with the nominees. Well, at least the winner I guess. Look at last year for example...I was most certainly not the 'second-best' or 'second-most popular' and I still won it.

I can't really confirm this on my own, but I can only assume that before I was nominated for the award during the last award round...only a handful of people had actually read some of my posts. So, maybe I wasn't underrated after winning the award, but the award means that I was underrated during the award year. Not against a name change or anything, since I do think Musket's suggestion is a good one, but I don't think the original name is as contradictory as you guys think.

EDIT: Did the award for 'Favorite Thread Runner' get nixed on purpose?

I'm thinking that requiring a nominee receive three nominations to advance to the voting round is going to unnecessarily restrict the number of nominees we actually get to vote on. There simply aren't enough voters for many potential award winners to receive three nominations, especially for awards like "Favorite RP Thread" or something. Perhaps the number ought to be lowered to two, or even one. *shrug*

The three nominations clause is in there because otherwise in past years there would have been too many members to vote for and it is also there because in the past there was more nominating actually going on. This year it'll just be up to my discretion most likely as to how many nominations are needed to move on.

Well, since there haven't been quite enough nominations and since I didn't have time today nominations are going to be extended until next Monday since I will be gone the rest of the week.

And even in the extra week I gave there still weren't many nominations. So because of the lack of nominations I'm canceling the FEP awards for the summer. Gonna try again in the winter.
