I know SaS discouraged Random Growths, but please hear me out.

I thought about this overnight. Maybe an item can be created that sets a character's level all the way back to 1 (if it gained any levels) and instead of fixed growths, it gets random growths set by RNs 0 to 99, akin to the canon Fire Emblem games. It's mostly so that you can just create a character and buy an item right away that makes it gain levelups by random growths.

"Fala, just no."

Oh, no! Don't shoot down my idea just yet! I'm not finished!

I know rewarding players with wins for effective builds > rewarding players with wins for random luck. But here's the fun part: These characters can only be used in a mode called "Random Growth Mode", which you can gain EXP in and gain weapon levels like normally, gain treasure and money like normal, and gain levelups by RNG rather than static levelups.

"Aw, screw you. My characters levelups suck. I'm going to lose 9069 games!"

No, you won't. Because in Random Growth Mode, akin to Practice Mode, wins and losses don't count. It also won't count towards your rating, tournament seed points, and your other precious rankings that you have earned through hard work.

The purpose of this is so people can explore and dick around, while it won't affect any competitive rankings.

NOW I'm finished. It's not so bad now, is it?

When I read the title I thought this only going to work if... And then you listed pretty much everything I had in mind. I think it will work, but I don't think I'll use it myself.

I'd play this, it looks fun and if your units end up sucking, you can always just buy the item again and reset.

What about just having this as a mode and you can enter any characters in it that you have, just that before the battle starts it randomizes their stats. That way you don't need to make separate characters just for this and each time you get a different result.

I think that's a better idea, that way you're not stuck with cursed units and players can't grind for blessed units.

I approve of the original idea, and while I don't so much like the second one, I don't mind it. I think that permanence is sort of an important thing if you're going to go with random growths, just because it actually creates some sort of attachment and personalization to your units that otherwise can't really be felt with just a transient stat change. The only problem is that those units will be forever relegated to their own "ghetto", and since random growth characters will be an extreme minority, they'll likely see very little use. Still, as a gamblin' man (insofar as I like gambling without any actual risk, so not really a gamblin' man), I can't help but like the original idea.

This is so much better, I can't imagine the majority of players would want to waste that much time on getting RNG screwed with entirely new characters they have to raise up.

Unless that ever forementioned campaign mode becomes a thing, I guess, which also seems a bit silly when there's plenty of hacks around if you just wanna play FE that isn't the actual games.

That said, I'm a very anti-RNG person in general, and this isn't really for me. :U
