Well a little backstory on their temporary boss was better than riding in silence while the mercenaries glowered at them. Not much better but Avalon was happy to have anything besides silence. At times like this she would normally check on her bow, adjust the string tension, anything to just be doing something. But at the moment that would be unwise at best, fatal at worst. She knew the Falcons were keeping a close eye on her so any sudden moves would probably be interpreted as hostile.

Everyone else said a litte bit of encouragement to Darius after he finished his story. Avalon smirked slightly and shook her head. She had nothing more to add. His gold bought her bow, not her feelings. And while as an Ilian she hated the idea of anyone betraying an employer stating so would just make getting the falcons on their side that much harder.

"That would be most appreciated." The archer responded as she took the mans hand. She situated herself behind Garen and wrapped her arms around his waist. It would be a fairly interesting ride since she didn't quite fit comfortably with the armored man. Hopefully the horse didn't mind too much, but since there were no protests thus far Avalon decided the beast was alright.

"There, I couldn't shoot now if I wanted to. Happy?" She asked their temporary captors. She was all too keenly aware of the weapons that were pointed at the group. If one of them stepped out of line the rest would no doubt suffer too. So, despite her desire to prove her skill here she had to just wait and see what would happen.

Kenth looked everyone he passed in the eye. With his face hidden beneath his helmet he could easily assess each possible opponent without them being able to gauge his response to their stares. Some visibly flinched though others, like the Ilians, returned his stare with one just as hard and menacing. Of course the berserker really didn't expect any less from a nation who claimed their chief export was their men and women as mercenaries.

The place where the tournament was to be held brought Kenth back to his childhood. Young boys ran about with wooden swords, no doubt dreaming of the day when they too would be able to fight in the tournament. The girls were a little more reserved though a few did join in the combat. The scent of many different foods wafted through the air giving off a mostly pleasant aroma.

Once they reached their tent Kenth took a seat in the corner. "Just gimme something to hit." He said coldly. "Especially if it is Etrurians."

It was fortuitous that their first opponent was the nation he harbored to most hate towards. It would provide a nice warm up as well as showing the other competitors just what he could do.

Avalon smirked slightly. She had always wondered what it would be like to try to shoot her bow with one eye covered. Though she didn't think that this was the time to try to find out since taking a bolt to the eye would most likely be fatal in this case.

"I'm not an idiot." She informed the men. "And I know you are not fools. You don't survive in your business by being a fool."

The archer looked around when they were ordered to mount up. This was also an unfortunate turn of events.

"I seem to have lost my horse." The archer stated flatly as she pointed off in the direction of the beast with two fewer limbs than it should have had. "Any of you gentlemen care to give a lady a ride?"

Avalon quirked one of her eyebrows at the brewing situation.

"I'm out for a couple of minutes and you all let the situation go to hell." She sighed in mock exasperation. It was obvious she wasn't going to be getting introductions from anyone, or even an explanation of what was going on. Still they had asked her to give up her weapons, something she was not at all keen on doing.

"I'll tell you what." She said. "I'll give you all my arrows, but I'm holding onto my bows. I don't want the lot of you messing them up." She slowly moved her hands to her waist and undid the belt holding her quiver. She held it out for one of the men to take, making no move to resist as they did so.

Avalon vaguely felt being moved. She hoped it was an ally and not another bandit that popped up. She didn't really want one of the crazies defiling her corpse.

Corpse huh? She thought to herself. I guess I am giving up on living then eh? I'll probably be dead by the time any of my allies even realize I am hurt. I don't really want to go now though. Eternal stasis would be really boring.

Suddenly life and energy were force back into her body as healing magic went to work. She had felt healing spells on many occasions, but none as powerfully as this. She bolted upright with a gasp as soon as her strength returned. Avalon glance at the faces around her, almost reaching for her bow but she decided against it. Things had just gotten a little more interesting.

Kenth smirked at the woman's answer, this might be interesting enough. He fallowed the group to the armory where racks of weapons awaited him.

His first choice was a good sized axe that he could use in either one or both hands. He gave it a few practice swings before deciding he was happy with it. Next he grasped the handle of a large mace. This would serve nicely for any armored units that he had to fight. Most of these tournaments were full of nobles who liked to prance around in fancy suits of armor so bludgeoning them would be good sport.

"This should do nicely." He said, smiling beneath his helmet.

Despite the fact that Avalon was competent enough to shoot from horseback she didn't like doing it. Still it would be something new to try. So she spurred her horse toward one indecisive bandit. The others in the group engaged two apiece so Avalon felt almost guilty taking on just one. She knocked back her bow and fired a single arrow at the man, planning on planting the arrow cleanly between his eyes.

Unfortunately in a surprising turn of events her target managed to lift his sword in front of his face to block the attack. Avalon readied another arrow and fired again but just as she released the arrow her horse suddenly jumped causing the shot to go wide. She was getting too close to the bandit now so she tugged at the reigns with her draw hand.

Too late. The bandit had thrown a hand axe. It didn't hit Avalon, instead it hit one of her horse's forelegs. The beast wasn't meant to take a beating so it was completely unarmored. The bladed weapon severed the horse's leg easily sending the animal tumbling head first to the ground. Avalon had barely enough time to jump free but still hit the ground hard. She bounced and rolled a few feet before coming to a stop.

She took stock of the damage, noting that she had hurt the wrist of her draw hand in the fall. She also noticed the bandit she had been targeting before was rapidly approaching. The archer knew she wouldn't be able to even pull back the drawstring on her current weapon so the left the regular bow where it lay. Instead she drew the wind bow and pulled the string back. She winced as the pain caused her to release the shot earlier than she had wanted.

It still struck the man but not with enough force to kill him. Instead he sped up his charge, giving Avalon only enough time to make another hasty shot before he was on her. The shot opened up a massive gash in his neck and force a cry of pain from the man's lungs. Still he came forward, swinging his axe like a wild man. Avalon dodged the first attack and moved to avoid the second one. Her foot caught on something and she ended up tumbling over again.

Avalon tried to catch herself but ended up crying out in pain as her injured wrist failed to support her. The sky darkened above her as the bandit she had been fighting loomed over her. Her side exploded in pain as he delivered a swift kick to her ribs and sent her rolling again. He staggered forward after her, though his steps were beginning to waver as the wound he had been dealt bled him dry, still he was determined to kill the annoying archer in front of him. He hefted his axe and dropped it, trying to cut Avalon in half.

She rolled but the axe still bit into her side, opening a substantial wound. The bandit dropped to one knee, panting and struggling to get up. Avalon rose shakily herself, her breath coming out in ragged shallow gasps. She probably had a broken rib and the axe wound wasn't making things easy. She pulled the string back on her wind bow one more time, this time not having to worry about a moving target. She finished him off with a single shot before dropping to a sitting position.

"I'm gonna lie down for a bit if that is alright with everyone." She stated to nobody in particular as she tipped backwards.

More arrogant men and a woman prancing around in tin cans. Kenth didn't care for knights that much, they thought their armor made them invulnerable. The Berserker simply saw it as a shell to be cracked.

"Just try to keep up." He told the woman. The grin that was hidden by his faceplate was evident on his voice. He crossed his arms in front of his barrel chest, looking arrogant for all the world to see. He didn't care. He was the mad berserker and the tournament would learn to fear him.

Kenth tensed upon seeing the signal. Since meeting the General he had been keeping his hand on the pommel of his axe just to avoid suspicion. His grip shifted ever so slightly to allow for a quick draw. If all went well then the biggest threat to his people would be dead. If it didn't then he wouldn't be in a shape to care. Crisp ashes would blow away in the wind and nobody would remember Kenth Taalar.

It was a fate he preferred to avoid if at all possible so he willed his muscles to prepare for action as soon as the attack signal was given.

Avalon stayed out of the discussion for the most part though the last part amused her.

"The mages might be too busy playing with you islanders to be bothered at the moment." She stated, waving her hand at Darius. "One of our strategists was hired to go play over there and there are plenty of small bands that are an annoyance to the world's police. Longscar, the Black Dragon, some guy they call the Butcher." She shrugged.

"I almost wish I was stationed over there, at least it is interesting. Going back to my original point though, Bern has a chance but not if a bandit nation sprouts up and kills a third of their army. If that happens then the best case scenario is Bern hires a lot of mercenaries to do the work of the army. After that they'll have to close up shop because they'll be oo broke to continue operating."

Here it is people, the Thing has returned to the Deadzone and is directly commanding the demonic hordes. Alimond has been struggling with being under siege for a long while and the valiant forces as well as a large detachment from the order of Zwi have been pushed back into the Kaflar region. All survivors have been prepped for one last push against a seemingly unstoppable foe, but as the situation seems darkest, heroes old and new will rise to heed the call of the sons of Kraid. The only questions are will you be there? and will be still be standing at the end?

Avalon busied herself with checking the shafts of her recycled arrows. She couldn't have any of them in poor shape if she was going to keep up her reputation as an archer. Honestly that was only so she could keep working and not that she actually cared about how others viewed her. It was far too late to care about that.

"So we can either stay with the main group and pray you succeed," She stated. "Or we can come with you and possibly be murdered by a group of savage islanders? Either way it seems that the likelihood of us dying seems fairly high. I'd rather go with the option that has a small chance of success so I suppose my bow goes with you Darius." Dying would just lead to more boredom anyways. What could possibly be worse than a state of perpetual equilibrium?

Avalon picked her way through the battlefield in search of any usable ammunition. Thankfully the both sides had lost several archers at the beginning of the battle, meaning she didn't have to try to pull any arrows from the corpses. Unfortunately that often didn't work very well do to damage done to the shaft or other various reasons. She filled her quiver before looking around the field for anything else of interest. Sadly she found none and resigned herself to waiting.

She looked up in time to see Darius motion her over. She nodded and approached. Once she reached the impromptu "command group" she took a fairly neutral stance and crossed her arms across her chest. Apparently one of the bandit leaders had survived and they planned on interrogating him.

Kenth crossed his arms in front of his large chest and thought for a moment. What team could they work well with? Of course their oppressors were out of the running, even Darius knew that. Hopefully he'd use a little more discernment when he formed attachments in the future.

Bern, well he personally had no problem with Bern, but they had been the country that left his nation in the state it was in now. But they weren't Etruria so he supposed he could live with them.

"I'd prefer Ilia or Lycia." He rumbled. "Though I suppose I have no objections with Bern either."

Avalon reached to her quiver to discover it empty. She mentally cursed for getting careless. She put away her double bow and once again drew the wind bow. It would have been far more effective against flyers but thankfully the bandits didn't seem to have any of those at their disposal. The battle would have gotten out of hand quickly if they had to watch the skies as well as the ground.

She allowed her weapon to build sufficient charge while taking stock of the battlefield. Some of the bandit pep squad had been defeated by a few of the stronger mercenaries. That left Darius and his oversized foe. The archer turned towards the hulking man and let loose with the anima powered projectile. It was made to be fairly accurate over long distances, so the chances of it hitting were good. Anything to distract the hulk really, give Darius an edge. If the Knight died then her chances of collecting a pay check would diminish. That had to be prevented.

"Don't even talk to me about going easy on him." Kenth growled. "It'll take a lot more than words and a glowing endorsement from you to make me believe that he would be an asset to my cause. I've never heard of him, meaning his family isn't making enough wave to even be worried about. You want me to play nice with him? Then keep him out of my way."

The big man turned to face the small table. He eyed it with disgust beneath the obscuring helmet. With a single quick motion he drew his throwing axe and slammed it into the table. The blade cut through the wood, slicing through the center easily. The remainder of the table cracked and splintered with the impact, breaking the table in two. Kenth turned to the crowd of onlookers before bellowing out a primal roar at the top of his lungs.

Now everyone knew to watch their steps, the Berserker was coming for them.

"I too beg forgiveness ma'am." Kenth said with as deep a bow as he could muster. "I am private Reynald. I used to work in a lumber mill until I heard that the Islander dogs were acting up." He cursed himself for having to say that. It was almost like slapping himself in the face.

"I joined up and they shipped me out here. Unfortunately they didn't have armor available for me so they swore that they would ship some too me as soon as possible." Hopefully that excuse would work...

With the majority of the bandits bolstered once more and the front lines crumbling Avalon had to stay focused on what was going on around her. She had once again drawn her double bow in an attempt to conserve her magical energies if she needed them later. Unfortunately that meant she needed to attack with either her reserve weapon or her double bow which wasn't made for precision. She still opted for the double bow and knocked a pair of arrows back.

One unfortunate soul had managed to break through the lines. As he charged to kill some defenseless archers Avalon loosed her attack. Both arrows lodged into his chest, one puncturing the heart. The archer thanked whatever god wanted to be thanked that the bandit had been close.

The battle wasn't going to be an easy one still. Most of the enemy ranged units had already been taken down meaning Avalon had to try to pick off the bad guys amongst the allies. That was never fun.

Avalon hated horses. she hated the smell, she hated the jostling. Nomads were crazy. Still, she knew how to shoot from one if needed, she just preferred to keep her feet on the ground. When the group was diverted to another location the mercenary could only think grim thoughts. Deviations from the plan normally did not bode well in any circumstance. She soldiered on though, she couldn't very well do anything else and still get paid.

It came as no surprise that they came under attack shortly after they arrived at their position. The mercenary immediately dismounted and unslung her bow. She carefully pulled two arrows from her quiver and knocked them back on the two bowstrings of her bow. She released the arrows at the group of bandits, not caring who they hit. With such a dense group of enemies it wouldn't be hard to hit them.

When they began to experience a return fire she switched tactics. Armed with her enchanted bow she pulled the string back and felt the inherent wind spell form. She loosed the "arrow" and watched it hit one of the bandits hiding in the rocks. The wind bow was much better suited to the far distances so unless a bandit managed to pick up a long bow she had no fear of retaliation.
